The notion that all good seed sinks in water and bad seed floats is just not always true. All the Iris setosa seed floats even after a month in water.  In fact it starts to germinate after a couple of weeks of floating.  Iris pseudoacorus seed floats for a few days and then it sinks.

With Cornus amonmum (a type of Dogwood) large samples of seed were collected.  After thorough washing and cleaning, about half floated and half sank.  Both types gave equal germination, both in percent germination and in the rates and other germination characters.

Of course if you are going to plant Oak acorns you want to float them for a day and disguard the ones that float.  These seeds are often damaged by worms in large percentages.  Also soaking the seed for at least 24 hours will improve germination.

The “sink or swim” test for seed has been around since the beginning of time, but first be sure to check your references to see if you are working with one of the rare genus that has seed that floats.

Tomato seed is inhibited from germinating while still inside the tomato.  Once the seed is removed and cleaned, it should germinate, though occasionally it needs to be treated with a chemical called GA to improve germination.  There are plenty of great tomato and other vegetable seeds ready to buy and plant at  Gurney’s Seed and Nursery or Free $20 off any order of $50 or more on flowers at Henry Fields!
