
Jewelweed

Jewelweed, also know as touch-me-not, Chelidonium, slipper weed, balsam weed, weathercock, Celandine can be found growing wild in woods, near streams and ponds, roadside ditches, and other moist areas.
Jewelweed, usually classified as an herb, was used by native Indians to treat poison ivy, warts, dandruff, and other skin problems. It is harvested and sold in natural remedies. Propagation of Jewelweed is usually from seed. The native plants do not transplant well. It is in the Impatiens family, but doesn’t propagate as well from stem cuttings as some other Impatients. Seed should be collected in late summer or early fall. Stratify seeds for one month is moist peat moss at about 41 degrees F. Seeds can be held for 12-18 months. Sow seeds in spring, preferably in a greenhouse setting, then transplant outdoors when danger of frost has past. Plants will reseed themselves in the area and starting them again shouldn’t be necessary.
Make sure new plants willl have adaquate water to keep soil moist. pH is flexible, from 3.5 to 7.7.
